This weekend I have had severe motivation problems that I have been working through. Because of this, I have found myself falling back to my favored MUD, Gemstone.
I have had to endure the barbs of many of my non-nerd friends about playing a text based roleplaying game. They don’t get it. For some reason, I just realized a way to explain to them why I like it, and why it’s fun to me. I also realized that this is something that is not just constrained to Gemstone, but applies to games in general.
Be prepared, this could blow your mind…
Games are fun not because of what they offer, but because they are not work.
I want to qualify this with the fact that most of the things games offer are fun, but they don’t have to be. Losing in Solitaire, dying in a RPG, having a horrible kills to deaths ratio in a FPS… none of this matters so long as it’s not programming PHP, getting cell structure data, or selling a bed to a moron.
This will now be my only excuse for enjoying my MUD, Diablo, or Tetris. I win, other people are stupid.
