This year, several television shows I am at least aware of are coming to an end. Ed is also coming to an end this year, finally. That show has been petering out for quite some time. I liked it initially, but as it progressed I just lost interest. While watching advertisements for the last seasons of Friends and Fraiser (I will watch Friends, but Fraiser I could basically give two craps about), I got to thinking about the final episodes of other series. For some reason my mind settled on the final episode of Roseanne, which was (and is) probably the most unnecissary, horrible, and confusing series finale ever. I can’t come up with any other popular series that ended quite so poorly.
While I’m thinking about it… Reality TV needs to end. Fear Factor is just getting disgusting and ridiculous. Survivor appears to be vaulting into a strange combination of new series and clip show, where they invite back the interesting people from old seasons and pit their strange personalities against each other in perhaps the most spectacular show of unoriginality ever. The Mole is still moderately compelling… at least it keeps you guessing.
Other shows that need to end… Boston Public, or at least they need to pull back a little. There is no way I can suspend disbelief that long to believe all that crap happens to that school in the time frame they advertise. Another one that really pains me is the Simpsons. It’s just… tired. They’ve done everything, and the stories are just slapped together or stupid now. They need to hang it up when this contract expires.
Since I am home, I have been subjected to much more television than I normally watch. Most of it is crap. My parents seems to really enjoy the overacted schlock that they show on the WB. I still enjoy Grounded For Life and That 70’s Show, however I am somewhat concerned by Fox’s advertising that shows all the 70’s Show cast in sepia tones and shows them off-set hugging each other, it just rings of “we’re ending this thing if you’re watching close enough to catch the cues.” Of the newcomers, Joan of Arcadia is a GREAT show, as is The O.C., even though I normally hate shows like that. There’s a few others I can tolerate, but at this late hour I am forgetting to mention them.
I’d rather surf the Internet or play with my GameCube, but then I’d get a raft of crap for not spending time with the family, as if TV watching == family time. OK, I’m done with my TV themed rant.
