Karate felt good tonight. For the first time in a very long time, Karate felt good for me. I decided to take some extra time to stretch my back, mostly because Sensei Hartman ordered me to. After stretching my back, he came over and helped me pop it by standing back-to-back with me and picking me up. It worked, I got a really good stretch.
The first class was pretty laid back… we got to do some interesting extensions to normal basic techniques. We also got yet another glimpse into the things that make Sensei Brewer great… this time it was the slight pause before coming into a lunge punch. He generally uses this to break timing in order to walk all over you for about five techniques, I just never realized it before.
In the second class we got to do some more advanced basics, and some sparring drills. I had a good time getting to spar across from Matt and Sensei Hartman, it really felt like the Good Ol’ Days for a little while. Non-karate people read that as “I got my ass handed to me.” I did manage to get a nice round kick reverse punch combo in on Sensei Hartman, but only after several ill-attempts and some coaching. Again, like the Good Ol’ Days.
About halfway through sparring tonight, I decided on a term for my sparring style. It is “Limbs, Limbs, Limbs.” This came to me after sparring with Matt, when I realized that my defense degenerates down to focused flailing toward whatever targets I feel are coming next. This Must Change. Also, I hope Matt shares the fact that his belly ate my side kick. That was a pretty funny occurrence.
