Last night Tasha and I went to the Pekin Civic Chorus performance at our old high school. My cousin John is participating in the chorus this year, so we were asked to come and watch him perform.
The whole show could’ve easily been renamed 150 years of the Noteables, since it resembled a high school show choir with a little more shuffling in the place of dancing. My cousin was one of about five people that were under thirty years old.
The show itself was actually very good. The theme of the thing was Showtime across America, so they had sections of the show that harkened back to the music from different areas of the country. They had a four piece Dixieland band for the Southern part of the show, making it clearly my favorite. The seventy-five year old guy on the banjo was pretty freaking incredible! Another fun part was when they did “When I’m 64” by the Beatles, and they had all the old folks with canes and walkers come out and lay down the drumline by rattling their canes and walkers on the stage. It was pretty fun to watch, but I’m roughly 90% sure that Paul McCartney would’ve had to make a system shock roll or die if he was forced to watch it.
My cousin had a few speaking parts that lead into some of the songs, and he also was the baritone in a barbershop quartet piece they did for the Iowa section of the show. I was pretty impressed, but I had a hard time believing that my cousin would voluntarily do something like this since it flies in the face of his rocker attitude.
All in all, it was much more fun that I expected. The show runs until Sunday night if anyone wants to go and watch. Tickets are $10.
