The long weekend didn’t work out to be so long after all.
On Friday we had an ordeal with a few sets of locks from Menards. We wanted to change the locks so we didn’t find heirs to our house still living in there, so we went to Menards and picked up a set of two deadbolts and knobs. The benefit here was that they would have identical keys for both the front and back doors.
My Dad came over to help me out with all of this, and we quickly realized that the front door had steel edging and the lockplate for the doorknob wouldn’t fit in the hole left by the previous set. I ran back to my parents house and liberated my Dremel tool from its peaceful slumber and proceeded to rip that door a new hole.
The lock set for the front door went in pretty well. The back door, however, was not quite so easy. Dad was installing that one and he noticed that the screws did not set correctly in the deadbolt. We called up Menards and they agreed to swap a complete knob and deadbolt set out so we would at least have the same keys for the deadbolt and knob.
I ran over there and made the exchange. The guy in hardware just let us take a complete single knob and deadbolt set instead of tearing apart another 2 lock set. This was agreeable for me, so I took it home. Before we sat into it, Dad tried the screws again, and lo and behold they wouldn’t screw in again. So I made ANOTHER trip to Menards. This time I was resolved to try the screws out there so I didn’t get stuck again.
When I got there, the manager girl about had a stroke because the hardware guy let me take something that didn’t have the same SKU number (a different item). Apparently this screws up their inventory system. The kid walked me back to get another set of locks and complained at how big of a bitch this girl is, and even the general manager of the store is sick of her hysterics. I got a lock set and tried it out, this time the screws fit.
I took it home, and an hour later we had locks on our back door too. They work really well and look nice, so in the end I’m pretty pleased.
