Last night Joe had another… incident. Tasha and I had decided to have him out at the same time as Perl. We did a pretty good job at keeping them apart, but Joe is now very aware that there is a female rabbit in the house.
Joe was so enamoured with Perl, he wanted to investigate her surroundings. She was safely caged up in her new cage, somehow Java Joe jumped himself up on top of the cage. “Aw, how cute,” we thought. I took some pictures, we were all laughing happily at Joe’s twitterpated state.
Then Joe decided that this was not the best course of action for him, and he prepared to jump to the ground. I wasn’t able to catch him before he did. Bam. Java Joe faceplanted AGAIN into the ground. This time, however, there were no teeth to break his fall and he plowed his lower lip right into the linoleum. At first, I thought he was OK until I noticed he was leaving bloody trails on the ground behind him.
We picked him up, and realized that he had cut his own lip with his sharp teeth stubs that remained from his previous mishap. We tried to stop the bleeding with wet paper towels and after some time we were able to. My sister’s fiance, Justin, came over to see Perl so I had him hold Joe (he’s VERY used to having rabbits and their ailments) while we examined his teeth better. He basically just scraped his lip a little bit, so Justin recommended cotton swabbing it with hydrogen peroxide. He said this cure worked with his rabbits and prairie dogs when they rubbed their muzzles raw on the cage. Joe handled this very well and was eating and bouncing around shortly thereafter.
This morning, Joe seemed kind’ve timid and quiet, but he was willing to eat a yogurt treat so I think he’s on the mend. His lip seemed a bit swollen, but I think he will survive. If not, I’ll take him in and have
Silly rabbit.
