Last night was the last practice with Sensei Quinn for another three years or so. Boy, he doesn’t leave you disappointed! The first class we did kata and it was one of the most intensive kata workouts of recent history. We only made it through Heian Shodan, Nidan, and Sandan, but everyone was sweating like mad by the time it was over.
Sensei Quinn showed us a different way to do the backfist strikes in Heian Nidan, and in the process of attempting it I felt a twinge in my shoulder muscle. No big deal, I thought, that happens all the time anyway. Later on in the evening I noticed that I had a huge green spot about the size of a golf ball on my shoulder, right where the pain is. Everything is moving normally without much discomfort today, so I’m not concerned about it. I just find it amusing that I was able to injure myself (albeit slightly) doing kata.
The second class was a very intensive look at kicking technique and how we need to use our centers when we kick instead of flailing our limbs around. I realized about halfway through that class that I was really pouring it on tonight for some reason and by the time it was over I was not only dog tired, but my hamstrings were feeling the newfound extension.
In the end, it was a good night. Sensei Hartman elected to break a few boards in new ways for the demo this weekend, so that’s always fun. Hopefully the demo will go off well. We’ve had enough practice over the years that it shouldn’t be an issue.
