For those of you that do not have day to day contact with me, you may not know that the basement of my house is slowly being converted into a Old English LOTR style pub. I was able to decide immediately that I wanted to try to find a barrel to have as a trash can. My plan was to find the barrel and paint the Longbottom Leaf logo on the side (as seen in the Extended Edition of The Two Towers) and slap a trash liner in there and we’d be in business.
This week my desires were fulfilled. My mom called to let me know that she swears that she saw barrels at Wal-Mart. I didn’t believe it, because Wal-Mart is the least likely place to have something like that. I needed to get some Diet Coke anyway, so we ran out there. Lo and behold, down by the Garden Center there were two large oak barrels. There was a sign next to each one that said they were $18.
We headed up to the service desk, and after a few attempts to find an UPC for these things and an exchange of money, one was mine. Dad came over with the truck and remarked that they looked like wine or whiskey barrels. We heaved the one that I wanted to take up into the truck, and his remark was confirmed. Whiskey leftovers started to leak into the bed of his truck.
We got this thing home, where it had been drying out for a week or so. Yesterday, Dad came over with his plunge router and we knocked the top out. It took quite a bit of effort, since it was nearly two inches thick. I rolled the thing downstairs and stuck an industrial sized trash bag in there, and now we’re in business. Now all we need is a old plank table and I think most of the basement decor is finished.
