On Saturday, we kicked off what will hopefully be a weekly home improvement effort at The House of Dalcher. Justin, my sister’s fiance, agreed to help me paint the basement walls a sparkling white.
I was skeptical of the difference that this would make, but in the end it came out to be astounding. Everything seems cleaner and brighter, and the room appears a little bigger as a result. My Lord of the Rings collection is going to look great once we get it hung up.
Next week’s effort is going to be centered around X10 Home Automation products. We’re going to set up the basement lights to automatically come on without having to fumble around the whole floor plan to turn on switches. I plan to do this with a motion sensor that will switch on the wall lamp and overhead light switch (which is located across the room). Since I bought a kit, this will leave two switch units and one lamp unit leftover.
All of those items are controllable through a PC interface, I’m going to figure out how to do some fancy scripting to determine how not to black out the future D&D sessions that will occur down there. If the stuff doesn’t get here by the weekend we will likely move on to hanging up my LOTR sword collection in the basement and pick a color for the kitchen and start painting that.
