The second Saturday workout of the New Year held a real epiphany for myself and McCabe-san. For a long time I have personally struggled with getting little feeling out of my upper body techniques, and on Saturday it was finally determined what is causing this problem.
It appears that recent focus on the draw (or pull back) hand has caused me to pull my upper body slightly back when doing punching techniques. This causes a break in connection along the front of my body, right where I need connection to be in order to get the proper feeling and smoothness behind my Nidan test combinations. It took much frustration, including McCabe-san getting stuck in a Rain Man like infinite loop of punching while the rest of us progressed through the other combinations, but eventually
It’s little revelations like this that are going to fuel the fire for the next two and a half months while we prepare for this exam. We worked out until almost 10 am before calling it quits on Saturday. I’m feeling it today along the side of my body and down my back, where the connection hadn’t been before. I need to do more of this in coming weeks to really get the polish on.
I don’t know if I mentioned this before, but my New Years Resolution is expanded from three workouts a week to four with an option for a fifth. Basically, I’m going to workout as much as humanly possible before April 2. More tomorrow!
