The upgrade of my MythTV software came out on Saturday. A quicky upgrade yielded several great advancements as well as several irritating problems.
For starters, I did a simple apt-get install mythtv-suite. This appeared to do the job, however to my dismay playback was choppy, artifacted, and would drop to a black screen after a minute of playback or so.
I decided to let it rest for a night, and I came back to it last night. I figured out that probably it was time for my entire system to get its software upgraded, so I did an apt-get dist-upgrade to do just this. Happily, (and luckily, I might add) this fixed the artifacting and general nutsackery that I was experiencing, with one exception: the black screen still pops on after a minute or so of playback.
After some digging around on the message boards this morning, it came up that others have had this problem and it is tied to reloading the IVTV drivers that run the video card that I happen to be using. I suppose I am off to try that tonight after Karate. This gives me considerable hope since the person that fixed this problem is describing EXACTLY the same issue that I was having, and he has the exact same system setup as I do.
I have to say though, aside from these little annoyances this update is freaking awesome. They’ve added streaming capabilities into MythWeb, they’ve added smooth Tivo-style fast forward and rewind, and they’ve also added a job queue so you can automate things such as video archiving right from the frontend. They have also fixed one of the bugs that was driving me crazy, so now I am able to remove commercials from my videos using my remote. 🙂
So hopefully this fix will work and all will be well tonight.
