I spent a long, exciting day at work yesterday on my birthday. I got quite a few very nice phone calls from my family and friends wishing me a happy birthday, and my office decided to let me pick the lunch location. I elected for the new Culver’s in East Peoria, and it was wonderful.
I went home from work a little late last night, so I was running to get to karate. I got there with time to spare, so I got stretched out and was ready for a good, hard workout.
By the end of the first class, I was ready to rock. I was somewhat itchy to spar last night, and after a little impromptu session before class with
We started out going half-speed, but it quickly escalated as it usually does with black belts. I got a few shots in, however it was quickly apparent that McCabe and I are still reading each other extremely well. We were both resorting to new tactics in order to get in on each other, and I decided that I wanted to slide around and try to do a hook punch. I tried, and my mouth was met by McCabe’s big meaty fist. It ended up cutting my lip on my teeth, and it’s marginally swollen today but no permanent harm is done.
McCabe wanted to stop after that, but not being mortally wounded I insisted on continuing for awhile. The second class consisted of all the Heian katas followed by some more slow sparring. Things went as normal during those matches, so nothing interesting to report there.
It felt good to spar last night. After class, Tasha gave me my first birthday present, The Simpsons Season 4 on DVD. She also said that she’s getting me The Clone Wars on DVD when it comes out on March 22. She’s SO awesome! 🙂
After class, we decided to go over to the Dukeses, where we ate onion burgers and had a very long religious conversation. All in all it was a pretty sweet birthday!
