Tuesday night we had a great Sensei Brewer workout. We started off with the slow burn basics that Sensei has made famous in the first class. It went pretty well, despite the fact that a test is coming and I think we have a lot of iffy candidates.
Second class consisted of all katas required up to second degree black belt, and we did it all in 20 minutes or so. That was followed up by some 3-5 time attack, where I was partnered with (Mike) McCabe-san. After a few minutes of down and back Sensei Brewer tapped me on the shoulder and said that he wanted to rotate in. He proceeded to beat down McCabe-san for the remaining 20 minutes.
In the interim, I got to spar with Erbe-san. Sparring that guy is like sparring a house with feet, or a truck with arms. One instance of frustration harkened back to the black belt test: I kicked Erbe-san full on in the stomach solidly, but it was not enough to stop him and he proceeded to bowl me to the ground. I have no idea what to do to generate more power than I am currently with my legs, and my punching techniques have always been sub-par on the power side.
This is the obstacle I’m going to have to figure out before Sandan test comes. I am somewhat grateful that Sensei Brewer did not elect to tenderize me on Tuesday night, because by the time I was done with Erbe I was not only tired but frustrated as well.
Oh, I also got one of my club shirts from Hickman-san. I really like that design and I’m glad I decided to get two. I wouldn’t mind seeing the old CISKA shirts with the bigger red logo and the club name centered on the front show up in the black and red scheme. Hell, I’d settle for the old ash grey and red theme, since the one I have is hilariously too small these days.
Last night I intended to go to Mapleton, however I did not leave work until 5:45 last night. By the time I got home it was 6:10 and I was feeling less than motivated to go into a second class cold. I’m going to Pekin tonight and Mapleton on Saturday, so all will be well.
