Since I discussed it with them this weekend, I decided to dig up my link and blog about it so that everyone can read this if they are interested. During my Masters work at WIU, I took a class on forward looking computing where we projected future computing trends based on bleeding edge stuff thats available now.
In researching for a few papers that I wrote during that class, I came across the website of Roger Williams, who has written several fiction works on Singularity theory and what the rise of intellegent computers might look like. In his work, The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect he discusses what a world would look like that was run by a large all powerful computer system that prevented death and cared for all aspects of human life. The story deals with the human boredom and conflict that arises in a world that is so sterile and managed and is a very VERY good read.
The whole book can be read online via the above link. I will warn everyone that this story has adult themes that may be disturbing and not safe for the workplace. It is well worth it for the brain food that this story provides though. Read it, you won’t be sorry.
