It was sweeps again today. We had a pretty short period of warming up, followed by an extended period of beating on each other. I was lucky enough to be across from Erbe-san during most of the sweeping exercises, and a few times I was actually able to pull off a sweep that actually worked. I consider that a large victory for the day.
We did get to do some slow sparring, and it just so happened that I was rotated out when Erbe-san and Hickman-san squared off. I had been working with Dave to fix his guard (he has one of the most convoluted guards that I can recall in recent history). He was starting to get it, however his elbows kept drifting out. I was just about to correct him on this when Erbe did it for me. With a round kick. To the short ribs.
For the second time in two weeks, The Dying Cat sound returned. The interesting thing was that is wasn’t a particularly hard kick, but it was just completely not blocked.
All that unpleasantness aside, the sparring was good today. I got to go with Sensei Hartman for awhile… MAN is that fun. The amount that we trade shots is enough to make that totally fun for me. He caught me right in the short ribs with a kick that was just enough to force a little of my air out, but not that bad. I think I may have landed one or two good ones on him too, so we were having a nice tradeoff.
During the course of the day, I managed to accumulate an interesting array of broken blood vessels on my bicep. Talk about a good Saturday workout!!
