After the basic test syllabus was complete, we split into groups for some kata training. I got both West-sans and we did some Heian Nidan. They both are doing pretty well, Jim-san takes correction very well. It is always more fun to teach people when you see that they get it.
The second class started quickly after a short water break. We proceeded to spar for the rest of the class, and McCabe-san and I sparred some more after class was finished. I love sparring Mike… he’s solid, and tricky, and he pushes me to not suck. I’m getting a little better about using my hands, but I have to get brave enough to drive in and not worry about getting hit.

I hadn’t really set up a target for number of workouts this year, but with 28 weeks left in the year I look to have 150 easily in hand. I may shoot for 183 workouts, which would place me at just over one half of the year of training. That breaks out to a pace of mostly four workouts a week, which I had been keeping before I passed my test in April.
Since then I’ve gotten a little lax, but I’m sure as we get closer to October the workouts will ramp up as we prepare other members of the dojo for their black belt tests. By volume this is more than I’ve ever trained per year in my entire life, so I’m pretty happy with my progress.
