Saturday was the first of two scheduled gasshukus. This one took place in the back lot of Mapleton’s Hollis Park Recreational Center, which is a HUGE open field. On the way up the field doing lunge punches, I counted and I got somewhere between 130 and 150 techniques. We did front kicks on the way back.
Then we did downward block with reverse punch halfway up the field, then switched to rising block reverse punch. The next pass back was inward block reverse punch halfway down followed by knifehand block with spearhand thrust. The final pass was hook kick halfway down, then switched to round kick. On the way back it was side thrust kick with one leg halfway down and then the other leg on the way back.
That was a BUTTLOAD of techniques. Garls-san had his Wheaties Saturday morning and was smoking most of us. I felt like my technique during that enduarance phase of the day could’ve been much better, but the unevenness of the ground made it hard to do each one with full speed and power. I settled for just “getting it done.” I was pretty proud of my Dad, he made it the whole way through like a champ.
After the basics, we did our kata 6 times while keeping in mind moving from ones center, which has been the theme of late. We ended off the two hours of training with some makiwara training.
Next weekend it is Sensei Brewer’s gasshuku, which is always a much anticipated day.
