I wanted to hate this thing. The trailers all made Johnny Depp look like Michael Jackson times a thousand, the creepy pedophile vibe was really driving me away from this thing. The fact that Tim Burton was directing didn’t help matters… I find that guy to be one of the most disturbed fucks on Earth.
Why, you might ask, did I decide to go see this movie if I hated the idea of it so much? Well, the simple fact of the matter is that it started to get good reviews. This confused me. Also, I loved the book and 1971 film adaptation. I started to get more and more curious, the more good things I heard about this.
So when Tasha said that she was in the mood for a movie but didn’t want to see an action film, it was down to this and Wedding Crashers. So we chose Charlie.
I must say, I’m glad I did. Once you got past the first ten minutes and started to ignore the usual nightmarish vision that Tim Burton has for everything, you start to realize that you really care for the characters. The acting was VERY good. The guy that played Grandpa Joe was really believable and they did a great job filling out the backstory so you gave a damn about them.
Johnny Depp actually gave a pretty good performance. He didn’t rely on the “I’m a creepy creep” thing that he usually does and really made you get past the weird purple rubber gloves and Liza Manelli haircut that they had him in. And the Oompa Loompas! I about shit my pants when they started in on their songs!
I remember being somewhat upset as a kid after watching the movie because there were parts in it that weren’t in the book. And they didn’t really finish the story in the previous movie. This incarnation really stayed true and filled out the story even a bit more than what I remember of the book.
I’m going to go so far as to say this has been the best surprise I’ve had in the movie theatre since
