Well, tonight I got home from a wonderful dinner of Steak and Shake after Karate and had The Moment of Truth on my two part molds. It appears that on some surface level my efforts were successful!
I pulled off my Legos and was buoyed by the fact that there was a small seam where the thin layer of petroleum jelly was. Some gentle pulling and cutting with my X-Acto and the two parts of the mold opened right up! I was pleased to see that there wasn’t too many places where the rubber stuck to itself, a few flicks of the X-Acto cured that right up.
The real test is going to be how the castings come out. My only debate that I have left is where to cut the pour and air holes on this thing, one of the parts is obvious where a good location would be. The key is picking a spot on the part that is not visible, or at least easily cleaned off once the casting is made. I may try the less elegant “pour resin in, smash molds together and let resin escape through the seam” method, but I don’t know if I’ll trap any air pockets that way.
So anyway, here’s the pic. Enjoy!
