My first workout since last Tuesday’s sparring extravaganza was yet another sparring extravaganza. This time, instead of Sensei Brewer I got to spar my Dad.
Apparently, I become a 70 lb 10 year old kid when I’m sparring with my Dad despite the fact that I know he is not going to hurt me. Its actually great training for me, because this is something that I need to get past if I’m going to achieve the natural desired sparring state of a Sandan. I’m really glad I have at least four years to get there, what a relief!
Either way, sparring my Dad is like sparring a brick wall. He’s starting to figure out the intricities of moving his stance forward using his hips which will bring him speed before long. He did a great job last night and I look forward to getting to spar with him again soon. I think I bent a few of his fingers back and he caught me in the mouth with a pretty good punch, but in the end we both came out largely unscathed.
Dad and I continued our sparring into the second class, eventually we rotated a few partners and I ended up across from Dobbleaire-san. He’s tricky… he’s got the formidable speed and lack of body control befitting a brown belt. He’s strong too… popped me in the left eye unexpectedly.
Upon hearing this my sister about had a stroke… I’m one of her groomsmen for her wedding this weekend, so she doesn’t want me all tenderized. I don’t know what she’s worried about, no one is going to be looking at me anyway.
Getting back to the sparring, I noticed that Sensei Brewer and
I have to work late tonight, but I plan to workout both Thursday and Saturday. I may pick up an extra next week to make up for my missing workout from last week, but I haven’t quite decided yet.
