I just finished breathing in the sweetness that is Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. This was the most Beatles-esque work that Paul McCartney has done in many years. After the first listen, I can honestly say that Jenny Wren is every bit a successor to Blackbird both in composition and lyrical quality. The tone of a few songs on the disc were unique… not in a bad way, just in a way that is different from what I normally expect from Paul.
I was looking at the liner notes as I listened… I noticed that as the songs went on, Paul performed more and more of the instruments (my favorite credits were for the triangle and recorder). The final song on the disc was so familiar that I feel like I’ve heard it before. I think the chord progression that he uses is similar enough to Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’ that it triggered an association, however Paul’s work is done on the piano in this case.
There’s not much about this disc that I don’t like… the fact that its only about 45 minutes long is a bit of a bummer, but its still worth the $15 I had to pay at Wal-Mart. They wouldn’t honor their own website’s price of $10.88. Retards.
