Tonight Garls-san was looking to delegate teaching tasks, and with Kevin-san running late I jumped at the opportunity. You see, I have had this sparring itch that has needed scratched for quite awhile, and why should I not share?
Garls-san warmed everyone up quite well and then I had everyone pair off right away. I built up a foundation of slow sparring based on one time attack, however I urged everyone to go slow but with intention. Also, I had everyone shifting around since we had plenty of room. I built the idea up by changing to chudan (stomach level punches), and front kicks. I had everyone try the same thing with a round kick, this time allowing them any block or counter they wanted.
Then I decided to have everyone try hook kick. I went through the basics a few times and then turned everyone loose. We ended up doing it for about fifteen minutes and everyone was sweating hard and having a good time. A few people have turned out to be naturally good at it!
To end up the class, I had everyone do 3-5 time attack but with the focus of remaining light but keeping the mental intention intact. Also I urged everyone to shift around in their area to get it away from being so linear. Luckily I had some good help and advice from Mike-san and
Second class, Kevin had all of the black belts pick their favorite black belt kata to go through. We all did that, and then he took my ideas and expanded them into the 3 time sparring like what the Sandans are doing now. We did that for five or ten minutes at the end, and I think the night was as decent of a success as we could have with Sensei Brewer and Sensei Hartman out of town.
