Tonight was the second of two planned kyu exams at the Mapleton dojo. Once again, it was a great showing by our students. There were two candidates testing for brown belt this time, Dobbleaire-san and my dad. Both put on a really great test, I was really proud of my Dad for sticking it out despite a pretty painful tailbone injury that he sustained while sparring on Monday.
In the end, both achieved full 3rd kyu brown belts. Its interesting to watch someone put their best effort in when stressed, sometimes they are able to overcome some pretty impressive barriers right in front of the testing panel. I’m really happy for my Dad, he puts a lot into his workouts and it makes me happy when things pay off for him. The hardest part about taking a test for an advanced kyu rank is the act of getting out there and actually testing. Its scary to be out in front of the panel of black belts like that, and it says a lot for someone that can stand up and do that.
They weren’t the only ones testing tonight, the Mapleton crew put on a very good showing and we had many additional promotions. I was most pleased to see the progress of the yellow and red belts… they were very impressive.
For the record, I am counting tonight’s workout because I counted last nights workout. It was basically the same amount of effort since Mike and I were allowed to repeat in our pre-test warmup.
I will be at the dojo again tomorrow night. I am unsure about Saturday morning’s workout, as I have a pretty full day between office Christmas parties, a wedding, and my brother-in-law’s graduation party. I will definitely be there tomorrow night though. 🙂
Congratulations on your promotion, Dad. You should be very proud of how far you’ve come this year! Great work!
