Saturday’s workout was both physically and intellectually challenging. We did a deep exploration of generating power by focusing on the core of the body (the stomach and hips). It appears that somewhere along the way all of us Nidans have cultivated almost correct ways of using this core area of the body, however it appears we have a long way to go.
I seem to have a propensity to use my shoulders and roll my back slightly. I can feel the difference when its being pointed out to me, but its so easy to fall back into old ways of training… I know this is going to be a long road.
I think the first part of next year is going to be spent focusing on this concept and starting to ingrain it into my basics and kata. The last half of the year will be spent continuing to internalize this concept and interject it into sparring. The power there is to gain from learning how to do this the right way is something that I need to get. It falls right in line with what Sensei Hassell told me to work on after my Nidan test: focusing on generating more power using my body. If I can figure out how to use this with the speed and timing that I have developed so far that will get me there.
Now I just have to figure out how exactly I do that.
