It appears that my dog has the epilepsy. The doctor took more blood to do a lead test (to see if we’re being exposed to lead too), however his urinalysis turned out good. His blood test did not indicate any system failure, and from our descriptions the seizures were not related to his heart.
Also, they went on to say that this is a pretty common occurance in golden retrievers. Teddy is to start on Phenobarb, an anti-seizure treatment tonight. We’re getting his enzyme levels checked in six weeks to ensure his liver remains healthy, and the doctors warned us that they may need to adjust the dosage as months go on to ensure that this gets controlled.
The course of action is being taken to control the seizures, but it is largely unlikely that we are able to eliminate them. They strive to have a maximum of two seizures a month under this treatment. The vet said that if he’s responding very well we may get to take him off the medicine as time goes on, but we should treat it for now like he’s going to get it long term.
He’s going to live, and they say there are *many* courses of action. They said that this is rarely the only cause for having to put an animal down, so we shouldn’t be worried about that.
