One of the coolest features that now works flawlessly is transcoding: resampling a recording to utilize disk space. They’ve added a “lossless” transcoder that lets you trim out commercials without negatively impacting the quality of the recording. It actually only transcodes the frames around the commercial cutpoints, so its technically lossy but only for two frames per cutpoint.
What’s that mean? Commercials go away, so half hour shows only take up 20 minutes, hour shows only take up 40, etc. That’s hard drive space savings!
