Tonight my lovely wife and I finished watching 2001: A Space Odyssey. What a great film… Kubrick was a genius. I want a HAL-9000 casemod now worse than ever. Tasha’s so smart… she was using the long theatrical sprawl of the film to start her film analysis engines running. She was remarking about the film’s meaning as it unfolded. It reminded me of an Honors English and Literature course we had to take where we got to analyze some films.
Unfortunately, my MythTV’s DVD drive is misbehaving. It, once again, got halfway through the film and decided that it wanted to bomb me out of the movie, and then all subsequent attempts to play back DVDs were choppy and the drive was accessing like crazy in order to do it.
A reboot cleared the problem, as it always does, but I think this DVD drive is beyond its functional life. I have to bring myself to do the strange dance that is swapping out hardware from my upstairs computer and this one. Hopefully it will work like a charm and I won’t have too much trouble. I am buoyed by some news on the MythTV user forums that others have had similar issues with aging DVD drives, so hopefully that is all that is required to make this fix.
