Tonight marked the triumphant beginning of service for my Sochin rosary that was handcrafted for my birthday by one
The rosary has small black beads that count up to a white fifth bead. I proudly marked three white beads tonight, or fifteen Sochin kata. I have adjusted my stance somewhat after the corrections that Sensei Brewer made, and the stance is reminding me suddenly of a bonsai tree I wanted to have when I was younger that had a big ol’ rock with the roots twisting around it down the sides. The stance feels now like I’m sitting on the rock, with one leg in front and one arched over the side at about the three o’clock position.
Aside from that development, my katas were somewhat ho-hum tonight. We did a lot of basics during the first class, including some partner drills to compel us to use our hips more. I was partnered with Mike-san briefly, we both had good and bad moments during that portion of class. He’s a strong dude though… connected pretty well on some of those punches.
For the second class, we warmed up with the black belt test. We really need to do that a little more, I felt terrible during most of it. After that portion was done, we did a drill emulating the Sandan three-time sparring. I found out that for some retarded reason I’m attempting to counter in midair, which does NOT work. Instead, I can take my time with the counter and set my hips so I can fling them at my opponent. This feels great when I do it, but its going to take a LOT of effort to break that habit.
It was a good workout tonight, but I am very happy that tomorrow is Friday. If I’m really ambitious and it dries out a little more I may try to make up for Wednesday night’s Sochin deficiency, but that may be best saved for when I’m on a roll on Saturday.
