I left the office late tonight and proceeded to stop by the house and get ready for karate. I really wasn’t feeling like it, but I went anyway. I knocked out five Sochin before class, and I’m glad I stopped there.
We went through a good, solid basics workout. I haven’t done this in a long time and it really felt like it. Nothing was staying together, I was having trouble with even simple combinations. My body wanted to revert to Sochin-dachi often during the proceedings, which made movement in a fast paced fashion near impossible. I muddled through though, so that’s something.
Second class was some really off-the-wall but quite fun sparring combinations. We got the opportunity to use these combinations on a partner, which really drove home the differences in some of the often-unpracticed techniques that we did tonight. Like vertical punch. And short punch. We never practice those techniques, let alone on a partner. So it was a nice, refreshing change of pace from the some ol’ Sochin grind.
Speaking of the Sochin grind… I’m hitting a point in this process where the last thing in the world I want to do is more Sochin. It was all I could do to focus my attention to get five out tonight, and I’m not relishing a strong Saturday of fifteen to twenty more. Logically, I know that this is just one of those plateaus and that it just needs to be worked through. Knowing this doesn’t help the fact that I’m feeling pretty burned out.
