My Dad and I got to the dojo early tonight in order to “get back on track” on our kata goals. I got 18 Sochin in before class. Mike got pretty close to his goal for the night too, so we decided to steal away into the other room to finish up on our kata during warmups.
Sensei Brewer came in right around Sochin #22 and proceeded to stay with us and give advice and correct us on our respective kata. I really appreciated the time spent looking at my kata… Sochin is Sensei Brewer’s kata and he had some great insights.
After we got through with that, Sensei suggested we try Jitte and Hangetsu so we did half a dozen of those to round out the first class. We went on to explore Jitte and Hangetsu during the second class after rejoining the group. Oedewaldt was running them through a pretty killer basic workout and it looks like they were really sweating it when we came in.
By this time I was beat. I mean, BEAT. Halfway through the second class my legs started to feel like jelly, but I made it through. Midway through the first class, I went ahead and started my last kata when Sensei Brewer was talking something out with Mike. He wanted to watch me do the front half of Sochin and I was past it before he realized that I had started. So after class, I asked him to watch the kata again so I could find out what he thought. He corrected several things with my timing and pacing of the kata and the proper feeling, and I am really glad that he took the time to help.
I really want to focus on his corrections for the next few hundred kata and see how it turns out.
