After the gasshuku, my Dad and I went to put the gates up. The instructions said repeatedly to measure the opening for the gates to exactly the size advertised on the gate, as industry standards dictate that the gate measurement includes the necessary clearance for the hardware.
Apparently this is not the case. Our two 61″ gates actually measure 57″ each. That leaves a gap that was too wide for the EZ-Latch assembly. We went back to Menards to see what they had available, apparently all of their gates are short measured like the ones that we got. We’ve decided to rig up a spacer using the extra top rail pieces that we have. By grafting an extra length of top rail alongside the gate, we will close the gap enough to be able to use the latch assembly on the double gates.
The front gate suffers from the same problem, so we are either going to return the gate and build one or I’m going to buy another line post and drive it the necessary distance from our neighbor’s gate to be able to close the gap. Right now I’m leaning towards building our gate, because I want to have enough clearance to steer my garbage can out and if I sacrifice too much space with an extra post I may have more trouble doing that.
I want this project TO END. I’m so sick of setbacks, talking to vacant Menards employees, and Teddy not being able to enjoy the outdoors. I don’t know if I’m going to work on it anymore tomorrow or not, the hardware that I ordered from the Internet hasn’t shown up yet so I don’t have much else to do aside from the gates. And I’m pretty frustrated at the gates right now. Argh.
