A few days ago, I struggled to get the latest incarnation of iTunes loaded on my laptop. Last week I did a spyware scan and cut a little too deep so it is difficult to tell what of my problems were caused by this circumstance, but I did have problems with the installation.
It would sneak right up to the last bit of the progress bar, labelled “Registering modules” and it would hang. Repeatedly. I followed the steps denoted on Apple’s support web site, and none of these seemed to solve much (but they did increase my system performance, interestingly).
In the end, I just let the installation sit. Eventually, I killed the process and I noticed that the icons had made it to my desktop (this is usually the last step of most installations), so I decided to give it a shot.
Bam, iTunes 7 in all her glory.
The interface improvements are excellent, especially the iPod synch screens. It actually gives you information about what is going on and a browser view that splits out the different media types that exist on the device. They added a few eye candy improvements, like a browser that lets you view your library of music by album covers (which it will now download for everything, not just iTMS purchased tracks). It reminds me of my childhood of flipping through a cabinet of LP’s… very slick.
I’m happy with the end result. I don’t know if I got bum installation or if my troubles were related to my recent overzealous anti-spyware activities, but it was more painful than previous incarnations of iTunes. Hopefully this will all be resolved with the next release.
