Tonight was interesting… I knocked out 13 Sochin before class started, and was then told to lead the first class. Since I had all of 30 seconds of time to prepare, I decided to shoot from the hip. I decided to pick a few combinations found in the Heian katas and blow them out into a workout. We did downward block lunge punch, rising block followed by two lunge punches, and knifehand block and spearhand thrust. I then took these combinations and put them into the context of basic sparring. I think the class went pretty well, and I got to weave in some elements from Sensei Hassell’s clinic this weekend. I really enjoy getting the opportunity to teach from time to time, it was a refreshing change tonight.
The second class was sparring. Lots of sparring. I got the chance to spar with Erbe-san all night, which was an exercise in frustration for me. It seems that my standard modes of attack and defense don’t quite do it with him. He is substantial enough to be able to absorb my attacks and keep right on coming. I’m going to need to do some sparring strategy research and figure out what to try differently.
