Over the weekend, I applied for my FOID card amidst a series of conversations with my Dad and brother-in-law about handguns during which I was reminded that if I wanted to inherit my Dad’s gun collection I needed to have the appropriate ID.
To many of my friends that have known me for awhile this is quite a shock, as they don’t expect me to have an interest in such things. However, in my blood runs 15% GSR (gun shot residue) and it just took awhile to re-manifest itself.
When I was younger, I used to go target shooting and an occasional hunting trip with my Dad and Grandpa. I enjoyed the target shooting quite a bit more than I did the hunting, mostly because I tend to freeze myself half to death in the process of walking a field looking for deer.
My passions for computers and firearms started growing right around the same time and since shooting/hunting was at best a seasonal endeavor the computer side took a little stronger root (much to my Dad’s frustration, I’m sure). For whatever reason, recently I’ve been very excited about getting back into recreational target shooting. This is compounded by the fact that my cousin, brother-in-law, Dad, Grandpa, and a few coworkers and friends have similar interest in this area and it gives me a ready body of knowledge upon which to draw.
Right now I’m looking at the Glock 17C or Glock 22C as a starter, because of their good reputation as being a forgiving, generally inexpensive gun geared toward defense.
