It was a truly small crew on Saturday… just myself, Erbe, Garls,
Well… not so much that I *wanted* to spar, but I made myself do it anyway. I asked
It worked pretty damned well. Once you set your mind that it doesn’t matter if you take several shots so long as you keep coming like some sort of Terminator robot you can really focus on breaking distance. This appeared to be pretty effective on most of the black belts. I still had some trouble enacting this plan on Erbe since he outweighs me by so much, however I did land a few respectable shots. I will be very interested to hear what
I took a few lumps, my arms are bruised from dealing with guards and counterattacks. My lip got abraded by a few solid counterattacks to the face, but it was nothing serious. The most lasting injury I sustained was a sore lower back, which has persisted until today. It feels largely like the time I injured it right as I came back from college… bending past a 15 degree angle down makes me feel like I’m getting stabbed in the lower spine. I’ve been treating it with Tylenol and heat. I think I’m going to make an extra visit to the chiropractor tomorrow to get me lined back up again.
This does not dissuade me from continuing down this path. This is a two pronged plan… I want to become very comfortable wading in and breaking distance. Once I get comfortable with that, I want to then figure out how to retreat in a meaningful and helpful manner from this position. You know… disappear like Sensei Brewer does. That just means that in the near term I’m going to have to figure out how to do this with a variety of opponents, and then figure how how best to use my speed to get out of that situation.
It’s going to be a fun and interesting few months, for sure!
