This weekend I started exploration into over-the-air high definition video capture for my system. Luckily, I brought my new work laptop home this weekend and noticed that it has a DVI port on it, and I had a DVI -> HDMI converter all ready to test it out.
I switched around on the various inputs until I found the one that the manual had indicated that the HDMI ports would show up on. I tried plugging in the laptop and projecting. No dice. I tried different resolutions. No dice.
The night went on, I tried a few other alternatives. Frustrated, I elected to pack it in for the night so I decided to switch the input back to the standard MythTV input (which is Input1). Wait a second… that’s my desktop and it says DVI1 for the input… it seems that my TV overrides inputs 1 and 2 when the HDMI ports are active, which means that my earlier experiments were likely working just fine. I was just on the wrong input.
That’s a good thing! That means that by purchasing a cheap nVidia card that has a DVI port I should be able to get high quality video output through the Myth. That would get me away from having to use the crappy TV-Out on the PVR-350, which will be a good thing.
The next step of the experiment is going to take place later this week thanks to my buddy Matt. He loaned me a spare HD antenna that he picked up for his basement rig, so I’m going to test my ability to receive over-the-air HD channels. If I am able to get the important channels from that, I may just drop the cash to get this going on the MythTV.
