I’ve been a little bad about blogging the workouts this week, but it has been good. We had a great class on Tuesday… we got to do some sparring, and it became obvious that I need to work on my “attack and escape” tactics. We’ve been working hard lately to get used to attacking and staying in, however I need to get back to working on speed and timing a little more. Getting beaten about the head and shoulders is good for confidence, but avoiding that fate is more attractive. I’m going to starting working on some drills that Sensei Brewer mentioned to help cultivate my ability to get into and out of my opponent’s range in the coming months, hopefully it won’t be long before it starts to help.
Saturday’s workout was focused on breaking down basics in order to get them correct. Adding appropriate tension for each technique really makes this process a killer. We augmented this good basic workout with a kata review to make a pretty laid back workout. It seemed that half of the Saturday crowd was coming down with something and the energy left the group pretty quickly, but we did make it all the way through.
The weather is starting to heat up and working out is feeling good again… I did a little kata in my backyard this afternoon in between throwing the tennis ball for the dog. Before long we’ll be out in the field in Mapleton scaling that hill with basic techniques, which is always a good feeling. Karate felt especially relaxing for me this weekend, and I hope that trend continues. It’s been hard to get motivated the last month or so and things are finally starting to calm down and I can enjoy working out again. I think this Summer is going to be fun!!
