Over the last few months, I’ve realized that very few of my hobbies are what I would consider “idle” hobbies, or ones that can be done quickly and without a big outlay of time and/or money.
Most all of my other hobbies involve some outlay of time (D&D, replica prop making, karate) or money (shooting, replica prop collecting, MythTV). Blogging is one of my only hobbies that is essentially free and that I can do in a small amount of time.
Even though it physically doesn’t take a great amount of time for me to sit and type a blog post when properly motivated, I’ve found that Real Life, my other hobbies or interests, and just lack of motivation can make the blog not happen as often as I would like.
Take, for instance, my karate blog postings. They are usually colorful (and sometimes graphic) descriptions of how my workouts progress, however often I have to piggyback them together like I did last night. In the past, my weekends generally went blog-free despite a distinct increase in the amount of free time to be had.
This is usually caused by a motivation issue… I didn’t feel compelled to color correct and post any of the many pictures that I have accumulated for the blog, and there are some times when I just plain don’t have anything of consequence to say.
That being said, I’m really optimistic about how NaBloPoMo is going to impact my ability to embrace some of my other interests in a way that will be mutually interesting for all of us. I am hoping that it acts much like the competition last year between
It’s going to be great!
