Tonight we were watching TV, and Tasha pointed out a very funny Apple versus PC ad done in the style of the old Rankin/Bass Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer stop-motion show. That reminded me of an episode of Antiques Roadshow where someone came in with a few of the surviving characters, notably Santa Claus and Rudolph.
I did some searching and found out the fate of these figures, detailed in this article. It seems that instead of selling the figures at auction, the owner dedicated themselves to restoring the dilapidated figures to their original glory and is now holding public showings for the holiday season to share them with anyone who wants to see them.
I found it very interesting that when contacted about buying these figures back, Arthur Rankin Jr responded that he threw them away all those years ago and that why should he pay for junk that he threw away 40 years ago. He went on to say that he’d accept them back if they were given, but he wasn’t paying. What a Grinch… I’m glad to see that the owner decided to spruce them back up and turn this trash into treasure that everyone can enjoy.
