While I was waiting to pick Tasha up, I noticed this bumper sticker that was affixed to one of the cars in the parking lot. It was a black sticker with white writing on it that read:
“For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration! Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient and the world will follow our lead to the future!” – Adolf Hitler, 1935
I read this sticker through several times, taking into account it was attached to a fairly groddy looking red pickup truck with a banged up fender. First thing’s first: it is obvious that the purchaser of this decoration is not familiar with Godwin’s Law, which states (in general) that the more exaggerated and ridiculous an argument becomes, the more likely one is to incite the name of or make comparisons to Hitler and/or the Nazi’s.
The second thing that struck me was the general vagaries presented by this bumper sticker. To me, it can mean one of three things:
- The owner likely does not support the registration of firearms.
- The owner might not support the ownership or use of firearms in general.
- The owner truly supports gun registration and really wants to demonstrate his support of Hitler’s whole bag.
I believe that #1 is likely the correct assertion, but no further identifying marks on the bumper sticker give any clues as to where its intent lies. Were I the mentally handicapped organ grinder graphic designer that created this bumper sticker, the least I would’ve done was give some sort of a further indicator of intent, such as “DON’T REGISTER MY FIREARMS” or “GUNS ARE BAD” or “I *HEART* ADOLF” or something to lead the reader to understand their true intent.
For the record: I support gun ownership/use, view registration as a necessary precaution in most states to prevent dangerous wacko nutjobs from shooting up the place, and think Adolf Hitler had farty pants and was a terrible human being. Just so we’re clear!
Also for the record: I suspect that
will have the first comment on this one.
