I did a bit better at my “arrive early and do karate stuff” target, getting to the dojo just after 6 pm. I did all the Sandan required black belt katas with Mike and then it was time for class to start. I knew we were in trouble when Sensei Hartman mentioned staying in stance for the entire first class. Luckily he changed tack right around the 10-15 minute mark, my legs were SCREAMING.
It was a good basic class, focusing on simple kihon, stance, and spirit. Things weren’t quite firing properly, and I think all the lifting and moving stuff out of our newly carpeted rooms had gotten to me because my back and knees were stiff all night.
This was not helped by the focus on sweeps and kicking during the second class. Sensei Brewer ran us through a great class, but for some reason sweeps always feel like I’m trying to flick a pile of dog crap off the bottom of my foot. Imagine what it’s like when I try to apply it in sparring. Fantastic.
Hopefully things will go better tomorrow!
