I was late to the dojo today, when I arrived the group was doing some sparring drills using roundhouse kick. Things were feeling pretty good, we did one time attack, three-to-five time attack and some slow sparring. The class wrapped up, but Mike and I elected to stay behind and slow spar a little before things were done.
During the process, he executed a front leg roundhouse kick that caught me in the right eye. The snap of the kick rattled my brainpan and down I went. I don’t know if I was momentarily out or not, but I do know that I have a little knot that will likely turn into a black eye by tomorrow. Quickly thereafter, I had an ice pack on my eye and was on the mend. After a few minutes, I threw back in and we decided to have some more slow sparring but it was quickly apparent that I was a little more rattled and as I executed techniques my head started to throb and I was having trouble keeping good focus so I elected to call it quits for the day.
I hung around for a bit after that talking with some of my other dojomates to make sure I was ok to drive home, and (obviously) I made it back successfully.
I think Mike felt bad about it, but THIS IS KARATE, PEOPLE. I would rather be his partner for one kick that worked well like that then to have him train a long time and never get one, so sometimes you have to “take one for the team.” I’ll even go so far as to say if you’re a black belt and you haven’t had a laundry list of little incidents like this you’re probably doing something wrong! More soon!
