It was a pretty amazing progression today. Tasha and I had to take our friend Erin to the airport, so we embarked at 5 am to make the drive to DIA. The drive was pretty harrowing… the roads were still mostly covered, snow-packed, and many people were driving too quickly for conditions. Thankfully, since we kept to slow speeds and good distance from other cars we made it there and back by 7 am.
My office elected not to open until “late morning” so I elected to go back to bed for a couple hours before going into the office. In just that short time, the sun hit the roads and started the melting process. It was so quick, there were large strips of road visible when I went to work (but still patchy ice). My team lead and I went for coffee around 11:30 am and the roads were melting so fast that billowing clouds of water vapor were coming from the roads. It was like dry ice machines got rolled out along every roadside… pretty impressive.
By the drive home, the roads were simply wet but not icy. They’re calling for more snow in the mountains, but looks like most of the treacherous conditions are behind us!
