Tonight’s workout was a pretty small one, only 7 students and Sensei Yaguchi. He allowed one of his upper ranking students to teach. We did a pretty basic warmup, this month’s combination of the month is: step back with downward block, at the same time arcing backfist strike (like Heian Nidan) and front leg front kick, then reverse punch.
We got the chance to try this combination on a partner, and then we got into groups of three for a fun partner drill. One person gets in between the other two, facing one of them. That person attacks with a punch, the man in the middle gets to block and counter attack with whatever they want. Then they change places with their attacker, who continues on to defend against the other person (the one that started out behind the middle person). This basically makes a figure 8 pattern of rotation, with the person in the middle blocking and countering. It got pretty heated down on our side of the dojo, and then it was time to move to kata.
We focused mainly on Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, and Heian Yondan. Our instructor focused on some of the finer points, which differed from the way we tended to do things back in IL. I took the time to talk about those differences with him after class and I think we mutually learned something. It was a great night and I’m pretty tired now. That’s all for me tonight!
