Tonight’s workout was great! We opened with some basic combinations, then did some Heian kata. We did Heian Shodan at one point, adding an extra reverse punch with every technique. It was kind’ve a brain-teaser, but reminded me of some of the variations that Sensei Hartman would run us through back in IL. We quickly moved on to partner training where we did a free sparring drill where one side attacked, the other side was meant to lightly block and evade.
After a few rounds of that, we moved on to our individual katas. I did a handful of Sochin, with Sensei Tarrant looking on and giving me some individual instruction. Then the black belts broke off and took turns helping the lower ranks with their individual kata. After the workout, I was invited to do some “cool down basics” with one of the other black belts. We have a differing opinion of what cool down means… the combination was: in front stance, reverse punch, jab, reverse punch, then jab and rear leg front kick. That was one. We did that 50 times on each leg. Ouch.
What a great workout!
