Tonight we started our Active Birthing classes. They are based on the Bradley Natural Birthing Method, and yeah… there’s quite a few hippies. But aside from that the information we got tonight was very good. We learned some ways to get the baby into optimal birthing position (apparently you have to start now to get the baby used to being there) and some good relaxation techniques.
I had to bite my cheek to keep from laughing when the instructor calmly implored the girls to “imagine that you are breathing in a radiant beam of light” and went on to how that breathed in light illuminated the womb, and recommending that they visualize the baby and their bolstered health from the relaxation.
Interestingly, Dr. Bradley was located here in Denver and originated from the midwest. He started to research alternative means of childbirth after witnessing how most deliveries were forced into drugs and delivered violently with forceps, and he figured there had to be a better more natural way. He wrote some books (I’m sure I’m going to have to read) and I think this method is sound. We’ll see how the rest of class progresses, but it certainly is interesting!
