I think this week was the longest stretch that I haven’t been blogging for awhile, not quite sure what happened there… going to chalk this one up to the joys of fatherhood.
On Wednesday, I crushed my big toe. I was walking through the basement and bumped the wooden high chair, which is down there waiting for Eve to be big enough to need it. The heavy wooden tray fell off the high chair and landed on it’s edge… right on my big toe just below the cuticle. My first response: stifle yelling and resist the urge to whip said tray across the basement. Immediately, I couldn’t put pressure on it and it was starting to turn blue within minutes.
Sleep that night was VERY painful, I was up several times because I would brush the sheets wrong and it would be sharp pain. And the throbbing… oh the throbbing. I hobbled around the office on Thursday, sure it was broken. The nail was now purple. My Dad (and a few others) gave me the advice to put a hole int he toenail to relieve the pressure under the nail, advising me that this might prevent the toenail from falling off. I tried a method of heating up a paper clip to red hot and using it to burn a hole in the nail, but that wasn’t working for me so I went another way: to the garage. I got a tiny, sharp, never used drill bit and finger-turned it until I was successful.
I will spare you the gory details, because they were gory… however the pain relief was immediate. I could walk on it again. It’s still bleeding pretty steadily and very bruised, but it’s not sharp pain and throbbing any more. I thought about going to karate tonight, however it’s still bleeding hard enough when I apply pressure to it that it wouldn’t have been a good idea. Tape wasn’t containing the problem. I was missing the training tonight, but I’m going to try to make it again on Tuesday.
That’s about all for me, I’m looking forward to an extended weekend… the rest of the office is on shutdown next week except for the Cat guys, and I had just enough vacation left to pad this weekend and still be able to add a week onto Christmas break. So that’s what I’m doing. More soon!
