Today’s workout started out with some really half-assed basics on my part. I needed to get warmed up after a week of doing other things than karate, and my heart wasn’t in basics today. We did Hangetsu, Gankaku, and Jitte several times and I was starting to get into a bit of a groove. By the time we had knocked off a few Chinte and Wankan I was feeling pretty good.
I’m surprised that was all it took, because I woke up with a pretty wicked pain in my side… further analysis determines that I have another rock solid deuce on deck for sometime in the near future.
After the katas and a short water break, we sparred and it was glorious. Matt and I sparred quite a bit… we either get tangled up alot or have a bare assed technique that just gets right on through. I haven’t figured out that phenominon yet. Garls was tricky as always, and then came McCabe. Fresh after whapping Dukes-san with a mwashi-zuki, he was pretty keyed up. He got me with a round-kick punch combination in the ribs. Twice. The second time it frustrated me because I saw it coming all too late.
Sensei Hartman and I sparred, and I was feeling rather ineffectual despite the fact that I’m picking up on how to negate his backfist strikes a *little* better (no, that’s not a challenge!) It was another decent Saturday workout… I hope trend continues during the rest of the summer months.
