Tonight it was just Kevin and I to teach in Mapleton. We devised a plan to have my Dad lead warmups (he did great), Kevin take basics for a bit, and I was going to play around with
We did this for almost a half hour, but I decided to stick to basics… lunge punch and front kick. I hope this let everyone focus on the movement without having to put too much brainpower in the techniques they were doing.
Some, such as Raleigh and my Dad, were getting it pretty well by the end. Others in the dojo were doing well, however they had a mental block that prevented them from moving forward quick enough. A light nudge on the back of the hips was enough to get some people past that block, and I think it was a pretty decent class.
The second class I got more of a workout than the first… we broke up into groups. I ended up with my Dad, who wanted to do some more 3-5 time attack so he could get the feeling back for it. I’m trying to get him to stretch out and use his legs to gain him distance. After about ten to fifteen minutes of this, he was getting “across the line” pretty well. He’s still thinking a little too hard about it, but its coming along.
We capped off the night with a little bit of kata, Tekki Shodan. I can tell he’s been working on it alot, he’s got that good balance of speed and strength that comes along pretty rarely in purple belts.
It was a pretty good night for getting back in the swing of things. I have a feeling I’m in for a couple of killer workouts once Sensei Hartman and I get in the dojo at the same time. 🙂
