Tonight is the 48th annual Grammy Awards, one of my favorite awards shows ever. I knew it was going to be good when it opened with the Gorillaz and Madonna.
I had heard rumors of Sly Stone showing up, and he did. It was so underwhelming that it was almost embarassing for the cadre of stars that was trying to hold up for his sorry ass. He mumbled some incomprehensible lyrics into a mic and left about a minute before the end of the song. I thought it was really bad taste, even though it was apparent that he was still very uncomfortable with being in public.
On the good side of things tonight, one of my personal guitar heroes Paul McCartney performed his song Fine Line as well as a really rocking version of Helter Skelter. Among one of the coolest moments of the night was when he showed back up with Jay-Z and Linkin Park during their performance to sing a bit of Yesterday. It kicked ass.
It is always nice to see someone genuinely honored to receive their award, and it was clear that Kelly Clarkson was beside herself excited for getting her first one.
Interestingly, it seems that Christina Aguilera is sticking to her vow to class up her act again. She wasn’t dressed like a Hollywood Boulevard streetwalker this year for a change… she still is doing some weird things vocally, but I guess that’s just who she is.
Good for U2 winning album of the year, but I’m a little sad to see that Paul didn’t win for Chaos and Creation. They’re doing a great jazz tribute to New Orleans to finish off the night.
Good times!
